Dominik Jäggi, what exactly do the police offer?
First of all, the police serve as a central point of contact for businesses in the event of an emergency, i.e. when a cyberattack takes place. We advise the affected companies on the further course of action, secure evidence, and conduct investigations to identify the perpetrators behind the attacks. However, we also focus on prevention by educating businesses, public authorities, and private individuals in the canton of Bern on how to best protect themselves against cybercrime.
Where do Bernese businesses stand when it comes to cybersecurity?
Businesses in Bern are already investing a lot in their cybersecurity. Above all, we are trying to increase the sense of responsibility among business owners as well as their awareness of the importance of having a strategy in place for the event of an attack and where we, as the police, can support them.
What are the most common types of cyberattack?
In the business sector, we primarily deal with ransomware cases, i.e. the encryption or theft of company data from the company’s network, along with phishing and fraud.
How do the services offered by the police differ from those offered by private cybersecurity providers?
Our task is different: In the event of an attack, our aim is to secure evidence as part of criminal prosecution in order to identify the perpetrators, stop them, and bring them to justice. Like private providers, we also work toward preventing crime and mitigating potential damage. However, our prevention efforts are strongly informed by our investigative experience, which we incorporate into our awareness campaigns.
What advice do you have for businesses?
The question is no longer if a business will fall victim to a cyberattack, but rather when. The good news is that you can protect yourself. Be prepared for an attack, and practice and update your emergency plans regularly. Cybersecurity is a leadership responsibility and must be taken seriously at the highest levels of the organization. Responsibility cannot simply be delegated to IT or third parties.
Where can business owners find more information on this topic?
We have compiled a brochure for businesses about preventing cybercrime. You can find this and more information on cybersecurity on our website police.be.ch/cyber, which is available in German and French.
